Jesus Dies on the Cross
John 19:26-30
26When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” 27and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
28Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

“It is finished.” And it was. He was too tired to fight the cross anymore. His strength had given out long before, and his motivation was quickly fading. Jesus had accepted everything that had been thrown at him, and now it was time to let go.
His last act was to relinquish his spirit into the hands of the One who had gifted Him with it. God, who breathed life into us all, had formed His son and imbued in Him this beautiful soul, this beautiful character. Jesus now gave it away, back to the will of the Father.
Jesus hung on the cross until the guards came and pierced his side with a spear. In order to hold to the religious law, the bodies must be removed before the evening on Friday. To make sure the thieves died quickly, the soldiers broke their legs. Seeing that Jesus was already dead, they simply stabbed him, just to make sure. Little did they know that puncture fulfilled what the prophets said centuries earlier.
It was over for the disciples and for everyone who believed in Him, but never really understood his plan here. The prophet, the priest and the king all at once were dead, and his followers had nowhere to go, and nothing to fall back on. As the day turned to night, and they brought the body of Jesus down, His followers slowly began to drift away. One by one, they began to scatter and go their separate ways. There really was no reason to believe anymore.
